Wk 8: Wireless Infrastructure Scavenger Hunt
For this week, I used notes from this field guide: http://seeingnetworks.in/nyc/ to start identifying the wireless infrastructure in my neighborhood. In just a short walk around the block there were already many instances of this network present. I didn’t take pictures of everything (partially because there are so many private cameras on every city block) but below are some of the things I saw in the different categories.
Row 1: NYPD cameras, traffic cameras, and private cameras
Row 2: Manhole Covers and Traffic Signal Controllers
These manhole covers were not explicitly listed in the guide, but I noticed the rectangular one was labeled CATV (cable television) which was one of the listed street markings. I looked up Bell Systems and found that AT&T is now their parent company so I am somewhat assuming this is related to the wireless infrastructure.
Row 3: Distributed Antenna System
Row 4: Distributed Antenna System and Street Markings
In regards to the street markings there are many many all over my block, however most of there are too faded to read. I think most of the yellow markings in my neighborhood are related to gas lines based on where they were, but I could not infer the purpose of the red markings also on this block.
