Wk 1: What is Resilience?
re·sil·ience /rəˈzilyəns/————— noun
the ability to not only survive unexpected or extreme events but to continue to grow positively through and beyond these experiences
Tools/techniques: community connections, self-reliance in regards to the production of goods and services (food, clothes, power, shelter, tools), foraging, survival skills, self-defense, sustainable reliance on local/naturally occurring resources, a strong sense of self, rest
Examples:
Take Care of Yourself (https://www.commonnotions.org/take-care-of-your-self) by Sundus Abdul Hadi is a book my roommate got me for Christmas. I’ve just started reading it, but it explores the need for self-care in order to facilitate collective healing. It seems very much in line with my current ideas around what is needed to achieve personal resilience, communal resilience, and the link between the two. I’m very excited to continue reading it in parallel with this class
The Nap Ministry (https://thenapministry.wordpress.com/about/) is an organization that explores the liberating power of naps and offers insight on how to deprogram the idea that productivity is the most important thing we have to offer. Although many of the skills I mentioned above in tools/techniques are related to producing something they are not engaged in the hyper-productivity for productivities sake I feel many people find themselves doing on a day to day. They are more a means with a direct end.
